Na Topor (LA PLAN[KA2]ETE SAUVAGE) en Moebius (LES MAÎTRES DU TEMPS) heeft Laloux een science fiction-verhaal geschreven, dat door Caza, wiens sombere en wrede albums bekend zijn, werd geïllustreerd. In het land Gandahar, dat wordt geregeerd door de Raad der Vrouwen, heerst vrede. Het land wordt aangevallen door vreemde indringers met een onoverwinnelijk leger van metalen [KA3]mannen[KA3]. Het verhaal wordt bevolkt door de meest fantastische wezens. De onwaarschijnlijke avonturen bevatten echter een boodschap en deze film toont duidelijk de originaliteit van Laloux op het gebied van de volwassen tekenfilm.

Sent to investigate, Prince Sylvain (John Shea) crashes and is rescued by the Deformed, hideous genetic experiments gone wrong and left to fend for themselves.
This animated film is set on the planet Gandahar, where peace reigns and poverty is unknown. The utopian lifestyle is upset by reports of people at the outlying frontiers being turned to stone. Sent to investigate, Prince Sylvain (John Shea) crashes and is rescued by the Deformed, hideous genetic experiments gone wrong and left to fend for themselves. With their help, Sylvain discovers that the Metamorphosis, a gigantic brain also created in an experiment, is trying to destroy Gandahar.
